Do You Know Your AC Filter Options?
Posted on: August 7, 2017
Your AC filters are a huge part of your AC maintenance and though you may know that regular cleanings and replacements are recommended, did you also know you have options? There are several different AC filters available for purchase all with various benefits so if you are looking to replace your air filters, here are your choices:
One of the most common forms of filters, the fiberglass filter is often called a throwaway filter. Most don’t last long and are even suggested to be changed every 30 days. They are made up of spun glass or fiber glass making them efficient for capturing large particles such as dust and lint.
Sturdier than Fiberglass filters, pleated filters have a thicker weaving. They are known to filter out tiny particles and don’t need to be replaced as often as fiberglass filters. They are more costly than fiberglass filters, but if you factor in the longer lifespan and all the dirt, dander, allergens and even bacteria they filter out of your home, it’s worth the difference.
A washable filter relies on the buildup of dust and dirt to be effective. If you are looking for something that you don’t have to replace, you’ll want to go with these but just don’t forget to clean them regularly. They are eco-friendly and cost efficient too!
Know Your Ratings
Now that you know some options, you’ll need to know about your ratings. Air Filters are graded on a Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value (MERV) on a scale from 1-16. The higher the number, the better the filter is at filtering out contaminants and allergens from the air. Most general filters you will find will be between a 4 and 13. If you are looking for maximum filtrations, you can also look into HEPA filters — just be sure they are compatible with your system.
