Breathe Easier

Posted on: September 8, 2016

It’s been a long, hot summer here in our beautiful Tampa Bay area. Your strained air conditioner has been working overtime with not a lot of relief in sight. As we move through this heat and humidity, it is a great time to think about the quality of the air within your home. Studies have shown that in many cases, the quality of your indoor air is worse than the quality of the outdoor air.

This can be due to hazards that have built up within your air conditioning ducts. These hazards can range from being uncomfortable to downright dangerous to the health of your family.

Fall is a great time to contact the air conditioning professionals at Midway Services to inspect your air conditioning ducts and clean them if necessary. According to the American Lung Association, there are many indoor air pollutants that can cause infections, lung cancer and chronic lung diseases, such as asthma.

Asbestos

Once widely used in construction, asbestos is still present in insulation, fireproofing, acoustic materials and some floor tiles. When disturbed, fibers are released into the air, and when inhaled they have been known to cause asbestosis, mesothelioma cancer, and other respiratory issues.

Even though the asbestos is dangerous only if disturbed, it can become an especially serious problem in older homes that are in need of repairs, are currently undergoing renovations, or have in the past. If you suspect your home contains asbestos materials, you are encouraged to leave the material undisturbed, and call the professionals at Midway Services to have the materials removed.

Radon

According to the American Lung Association, “Radon is a colorless, tasteless and odorless gas that causes lung cancer. Radon can build up to dangerous levels inside homes, schools and other buildings. Exposure to radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States, after smoking.”

Radon is emitted from uranium, found in nearly all soils throughout the country. While low doses of radon can be harmless in open outdoor air, it can be extremely dangerous if it seeps in through your home’s foundation and builds up to higher levels within your home. Our state of the art equipment will detect radon levels so we can advise you if you need remedial treatment.

Mold and Dampness

Scientists tell us that mold exists everywhere. There are no indoor spaces that are free from mold. Moisture is needed for mold to grow and become dangerous. We live with very high humidity in the Tampa Bay area, so mold can easily become an indoor health hazard.

Dampness and mold have been linked to:

  • Worsening asthma
  • Coughing & wheezing
  • Nasal congestion
  • Sore throat
  • Sneezing

Mold can grow inside the ductwork of your HVAC system.  Professional air conditioning services can provide a complete analysis, install filters, and perform duct cleaning if necessary.

If you feel like the indoor air quality of your Tampa or St. Petersburg home needs to be inspected, contact Midway Services today to schedule an appointment and eliminate these pollutants.
