Arc Fault Circuit Interrupters (AFCIs)

What You Need to Know

AFCIs are new protective devices that replace standard circuit breakers in your home’s electric panel. These devices offer additional protection against fire hazards that are commonly known as arc faults.

According to Wikipedia, an arc fault is a high power discharge of electricity between two or more conductors. This discharge translates into heat, which can break down the wire’s insulation and possibly trigger an electrical fire. Common causes of arc faults include faulty connections due to corrosion and faulty initial installation.

If your home does not have AFCIs installed, dangerous electrical faults may be hidden until it’s too late. Upgrading to AFCIs from standard circuit breakers will significantly increase the electrical safety in your home.

In fact, these devices are so effective that the National Electric Code now requires that they be used to protect almost every home circuit in the United States since 2008.
