Lightning Capital: Tampa Bay
Posted on: May 2, 2016
Did you know that Tampa Bay and Central Florida holds the title of Lightning Capital of the Untied States? It has been recorded that there are lightning storms an average of 100 days a year in our neck of the woods. These powerful electric storms occasionally cause harm and damage to our cities, however there are protective measures that you can take to rest assured that you and your family are safe when the lightning begins to strike.
It is important to note that lightning can strike and cause harm from as far as 10 miles away, so when you hear thunder, there is always a possibility of a strike nearby. It’s always a good idea to get inside during any sort of storm and stay more internal, away from large windows. Many people have concerns about what frequent storms can do to their houses, so we are here to let you know how to protect your home from lightning strikes.
One very common issue that can occur when lightning strikes nearby is the frying of wires into your home, including damaging your TV, computers, and other electronics. Unplugging these types of home appliances when there is a storm is the best way to prevent damage to these items, however if you are not keen on unplugging them each time the thunder cracks, then at least take precautionary measures by plugging them into a surge protector. Although these do wonders to try and protect your electronics, still a powerful strike can jump through even these lines.
Adding a lightning rod to the top of your home is a great way to deter the strike from spreading through your entire housing frame and potentially causing a fire. Many buildings around the Tampa Bay area have lightning rods atop them, take a look sometime, you may be surprised!
It’s a common misconception that lightning cannot strike the same place twice during the same storm, so do not take that as comfort if something has already been hit. Being prepared for anything is always the best way to be when it comes to this situation.
