Plumbing Myths Versus Facts

Posted on: August 17, 2015

As a professional plumbing company serving the Largo area and beyond, we want to help you keep your home running smoothly—which means properly maintaining all the separate systems throughout it.  When it comes to your drains and plumbing appliances, there seem to be a lot of misconceptions about what is okay and what’s not. Below are some of these myths, why you shouldn’t believe them, and what to do instead.Midway HiRez photos 014 resize

Myth 1: Running water through the garbage disposal helps the waste travel smoothly.

While running water may help break some of the debris down there up, running water does not mean you can put anything that was needed to make dinner down the disposal. Hard foods like eggshells and banana peels should not be put down the drain. They can harm the system on the way down and result in you having to call a plumbing company to repair extensive issues. One of the best ways to prevent the need of costly repairs and replacements is by watching what you put down the drain to begin with!

Myth 2: If things are still going down my drain, it is not clogged.

Just because it’s working doesn’t mean it’s not at risk. If you spot even the smallest sign of abnormality in your Largo home’s plumbing system, it’s time to take action. Waiting until it stops working completely will end up costing you a lot of unnecessary money and energy. One early warning sign to watch for is if  your disposal begins moving slower.

Myth 3: Chemical drain clog removers are the best.

Many of the chemical drain cleaners you buy in stores will be able to remove the stoppage, but they will also corrode your pipes. Instead, for smaller clogs, use boiling water, vinegar, and baking soda to break it up. For larger ones, you should call an expert as soon as possible.

Myth 4: Fixtures require little to no maintenance.

Homeowners should be regularly checking for obstructions as well as preforming fixture upkeep to avoid serious issues. Pipes can corrode, rot, and break over time. Hard water and no maintenance will cause deterioration much quicker than normal. Instead, regular plumbing repairs and maintenance by professionals will keep your home working like new.
