Not all surge protection systems are the same, and making sure you get the right one for your home in New Port Richey is crucial. There are three main types, and they all work slightly different:
- Type 1 devices will protect you from external surges, coming from the power company or lightning strikes. They are installed right between the utility pole and your home’s power meter to stop the surge before it even enters your home. While these are a great first line of defense, your local New Port Richey power company will need to be involved with the installation.
- Type 2 protectors are installed at the main circuit breaker, or the branch panel. This is where the power is fed too, before going out to all of the other breakers in your home. When connected, this type of surge protection at the branch panel will protect that circuit and all of the circuits it feeds. A benefit of this system is that is protects from both external and internal surges.
- Type 3 is the basic power strip with built in protection. They are considered “point of use” since they only work for the appliances plugged directly into them. While they are not much help on their own, these can be extremely when combined with either a type 1 or 2.
