What to do When Your Drain is Clogged

Posted on: November 13, 2014

Regardless if it’s your kitchen sink or your shower, finding out you have a clogged drain can be frustrating. You know the warning signs: water doesn’t disappear down the pipe as quickly, and then it stops going down altogether and begins to pool; you might have even noticed a weird smell coming from the drain. If the stoppage is bad enough, you may need to call for professional plumbing repairs in Palm Harbor. However, there are some at-home tricks you can try first.

Wire Hanger

Unbend the wire, so one end is in the shape of a hook. Then, snake it down the drain to hopefully grab onto whatever is causing the blockage. However, it is important that you don’t push anything further down the pipe, as that can cause even more damage.

Baking Soda and Vinegar

If you couldn’t grab anything with the hanger, you can try the age old combination of baking soda and vinegar. Just like the volcanoes you made in science class, the same principle will be used here with this DIY plumbing repair. Mix the ingredients and pour them down the drain; the longer you leave them in there, the better, although one hour will suffice. The fizzing will help to break up any built up grime. Afterwards, pour boiling water down the drain to flush everything out.

Water Pressure

If the stoppage is in your bath tub, create the same mixture mentioned above, but after you pour it down the drain, put a stopper over it. Then, fill up the bath tub as much as possible. Once it is full, take out the stopper and let the water go down the drain. The pressure of 60 gallons of water coupled with the baking soda and vinegar, should be enough to flush out anything stopping up the pipe.
